George Wimpey, a brief history

The Craigie Orchards townhouse development was built by the well known British house developer, George Wimpey and Co. Ltd.

Founded in 1880 as a stone working company based in Hammersmith, London, Wimpey quickly grew into one of the UK's largest home builders. In 1956, Wimpey broke ground on its first Canadian development and started developing its interests in North America.

By the mid-1970s, Wimpey was focusing on building quality compact housing and by then had become a household name offering well designed small family homes.

Over the years, Wimpey has compiled an impressive list of notable projects. These include:
      - sections of London Airport (now Heathrow)
      - member of the Channel Tunnel development, and
      - Walt Disney's experimental home development, Celebration, in Orlando, Florida.

In 2007, the company merged with developer Taylor Woodrow and operates internationally today under the name of Taylor Wimpey.

Construction on the Craigie Orchards townhouse development began with the acquisition of the orchard property on the southeast corner of the Tenth Line (now Hurontario) and Mineola Road, in 1975.
